Rooted in Him
by Joe McIntyre
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, Colossians 2:6
Think for a moment about how you received Christ as your Savior. Someone shared with you (or you read) the story of Christ’s death for your sins and that He rose from the dead. As you heard the message, your heart was illuminated and you asked Jesus to be your Lord. You acted on Romans 10:9-10
That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
You heard about Jesus, you accepted it as truth and you acted on what you heard and received Christ as your Lord. As you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, so walk in Him. The life of faith is so simple; many stumble over it and do not grasp it. Hear about Jesus, accept what we hear as truth, and act upon it to receive it.
As a result of our receiving Christ we were grafted into Christ. As Paul puts in Colossians
Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 2:7
The original Greek of the New Testament is a little more exact:
Having been rooted with the present result that you are firmly established, and constantly being built up in Him and constantly being established with reference to the Faith, even as you were instructed, abounding in it in the sphere of thanksgiving. Col 2:4
(The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)
It was your Father that rooted you in Christ and now your roots go down deep in Him. You are firmly established in Him. As you hear the unfolding drama of all Christ has done for you, you are constantly being built up in Him and your faith is giving you an unshakeable stability in your walk with Him. Father has rooted you. As you hear and understand more of the grace of God given us in Christ, you are growing up into Him in all things. Father has done it for us.
But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 1 Cor 1:30 NASU
By our Father’s doing we are in Christ. We are rooted in Him. He is our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Our human spirit is joined to the Lord. He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit (1 Cor. 6:17). Through that union we partake of His righteousness, His wisdom, His holiness and His redemption. When He rose from the dead, He left all of the baggage of sin, sickness and death behind Him. And in Him we are free from it all.
As we see these amazing truths in the Word we are built up in Him. Father has established us and rooted us in union with His Son. As the revelation of the mystery of Christ unfolds to us we are built up in Him. We are being established in the faith, overflowing in it with thanksgiving.
The source of our joy and thanksgiving lies in what Christ has done and is doing in us. As we behold Him in His resurrection glory in the Word, we are transformed into the same image. Rather than one day a year called Thanksgiving, we are filled with thanksgiving every day in our gratitude to Him for His mercy and grace.
